Understanding

What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is a sensation of spinning or motion when you are perfectly still. Often described as dizziness, it makes you feel as if your surroundings are moving. Vertigo is typically a symptom of an underlying vestibular system issue in the inner ear or brain.

Living with recurrent vertigo can lead to fall risks, anxiety, and extreme nausea. Our clinic focuses on accurate diagnosis, pinpointing peripheral or central causes, and utilizing drug-free therapies to resolve balance issues successfully.

Common Vertigo Types

Vertigo is categorized based on whether the origin is inside the inner ear balance canals or the brain.

BPPV

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. Triggered by specific head movements, caused by tiny calcium carbonate crystals displacing into the inner ear fluid canals.

Ear Crystals Positional

Peripheral Vertigo

Originates in the inner ear balance nerves. Common causes include vestibular neuritis (viral infection of the nerve) and Meniere's disease (fluid build-up in the ear).

Inner Ear Nerve Swelling

Central Vertigo

Originates in the brainstem or cerebellum. Triggered by conditions like vestibular migraines, strokes, tumors, or multiple sclerosis.

Brain Stem Central Origins

When to Seek Emergency Care

Seek immediate medical attention if vertigo is accompanied by:

Double vision or blurred vision
Slurred speech or difficulty talking
Weakness or numbness in arms or legs
Difficulty walking or loss of coordination

Vertigo Symptoms

Vertigo presents with a spinning sensation that can trigger physical and sensory reflexes in the body.

Key Signs
  • Spinning or tilting sensation
  • Loss of balance / unsteadiness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sweating or pallor
Ear & Eye Reflexes
  • Abnormal eye movements
  • Ringing in ears (tinnitus)
  • Hearing loss (in one ear)
  • Fullness feeling in ear canal
Movement Sensitivities

Symptoms are typically exacerbated by head movements, rolling over in bed, tilting the head upward, or sudden posture shifts.

Diagnosis

Diagnosing Vertigo

Diagnosing vertigo involves checking both your balance systems and inner ear fluid pathways to identify positional triggers.

1

Dix-Hallpike Maneuver

A clinical movement test to trigger positional nystagmus (involuntary eye movement) and verify BPPV in the canals.

2

Vestibular Testing

Video-nystagmography (VNG) tests and caloric stimulation check inner ear balance responses.

3

Brain MRI

High-resolution imaging to rule out brainstem strokes, multiple sclerosis plaques, acoustic neuromas, or tumors.

4

Hearing Evaluation

Audiometry screening to rule out Meniere's disease or acoustic nerve issues that affect hearing pathways.

Comprehensive Vertigo Treatment Options

Many types of vertigo can be resolved without pills. We offer targeted maneuvers and custom physical rehabilitation therapies.

Canalith Repositioning (Epley Maneuver)

Drug-free physical crystal resetting

For BPPV sufferers, a series of structured head movements guided by the doctor rolls floating ear crystals back into place, providing relief.

  • Epley and Semont maneuvers
  • Over 90% success rate in BPPV

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT)

Retraining balance & stabilizing gaze

Custom exercises designed to help your brain compensate for inner ear abnormalities, improving stability and reducing fall risk.

  • Gaze stabilization drills
  • Balance training exercises

Pharmacological Therapies

Vestibular suppressants & anti-emetics

Medications can help control severe acute symptoms of dizziness and nausea during flare-ups or viral infections of the vestibular nerve.

  • Acute vestibular suppressants
  • Preventive therapies for vestibular migraine

Diet & Safety Guidance

Low-sodium dietary support & safety checks

For Meniere's disease, dietary fluid control (limiting salt and caffeine) helps manage pressure build-up in the inner ear canals.

  • Low-salt, low-caffeine diet tracking
  • Fall-prevention safety planning
